Facebook’s brand - the word ‘facebook’ - reeks of college and kids and social lives. Not of business.
But as Facebook continues to dominate - as it clearly will for a couple of years until the next most amazing thing surfaces - it’s going to have to move deeper into the business / professional world. Well, FB doesn’t have to, but we all know it will, so it can grow grow grow. I predict this means spinning off a new label. Something other than ‘Facebook’ so that pros can take it seriously for business services like email, apps, etc.
Google does not have this problem. Yes, their brand could be called silly, but it’s safe for work and play. Facebook just doesn’t sound serious enough for business. Facebook owns FB.com - they could be readying that for business services (FB = “Facebook for Business?”). Or they might acquire a B2B company and keep its shingle hanging instead of absorbing it.
I, for one, would love to think of Facebook as more than a place to spy on your friends.
It will be interesting to watch. Coincidentally, ‘Bionic’ would be a great brand for Facebook and I’ll happily contribute my domain Bionic.com for a measly 1% of FB.
